I love pie...
Specifically peach pie...
I like rhubarb pie if it does not have strawberries in it. That ruins both the rhubarb and the strawberries. My grandmother used to make gooseberry pie. As a child I tried a gooseberry off the bush. It did not taste like gooseberry pie...
No one grows gooseberries anymore.
Hey, I'm typing thirty yards from a gooseberry bush! Very hardy, they're indifferent to whether you care for them or not. If you let the berries ripen they turn almost black, sweet and incredibly flavorful. Of course the birds aren't about to let that happen unless you cover with netting.
ReplyDeleteI've got both wild and tame gooseberries here. The tame ones do seem to have suffered from neglect the past few years. So true that they need to be left on the tree til they turn purple. When they are green they are none to appealing to the taste.
ReplyDeleteHere we go with the demographic thing. Farmers with old tractors and gooseberry bushes? We are someone's target audience. Probably a mental health professional.
ReplyDeleteWell, I would like to have a gooseberry bush. Perhaps I will have to check out the garden catalogue this spring!
